DC Direct DC Comics Classic Animation Maquette Series: Fleischer Studios’ Style Superman

In 2004, DC Direct, the collectible and toy arm of DC Comics, began their series of maquettes based on classic animated series starring DC characters. A maquette is a fancy way of saying statue; maquettes like this one were used as a three-dimensional artist reference for animated characters. This Superman maquette’s design is based on the famous series of animated Superman shorts from the 1940s by Fleischer Studios. I previously covered Lois Lane here. This statue stands about 10″ tall and was released in a limited edition of 4000 pieces.

The full color box features photos of the Superman statue at various angles on a bright background, and the back shows some of the other characters in the series.

The statue itself is very nicely sculpted in a great likeness of Superman from those classic 40s cartoons. It’s a great piece, and even though it’s a modern product, it looks fantastic on a shelf with older Golden Age Superman collectibles.
