The Pepsi Super Series of glasses is also known to collectors as the Moon series because they feature a circle as a background. Issued in 1976, the full set consisted a 14 characters… let’s see if I can name them off the top of my head:
- Wonder Woman
- Green Lantern
- Green Arrow
- Shazam/Captain Marvel
Whew! (Had to look up the last to, so don’t be too impressed.) Anyway, these are really popular with DC comics fans, and why not… they’re really nice and it’s still relatively affordable to collect a complete set. You don’t trip over these at every flea market like you might with the Looney Tunes glasses from the same time period, but there are still plenty around. I even drink out of mine on occasion… just don’t send them through the dishwasher!
This example is Supergirl… as you can see by the enlarged pictures, she’s a little off-register, but I like pop art, so I don’t mind seeing flaws in the manufacturing process in there a little bit. The design was printed on this glass in four inks: yellow, red, blue, and black, where the lightest color (yellow) is laid down first, and black is printed last. The flesh tone is achieved by using halftone dots in the red ink… when you see it from further away, your eye will see the red and yellow blended into an orange-ish skin tone.
The same design is printed on two sides, then a small Pepsi logo with the copyright information is printed on the side.
Pepsi released a second Super Series of DC Comics glasses in 1978 with more action-oriented poses.
Some prototypes and test issues of DC Comics Pepsi glasses have surfaced, including this awesome 1978 Supergirl shown in the Flickr photos of collector Jimmy Tyler.
