Hard to believe it’s been ten years since these guys were released. These are DC Comics Pocket Heroes, DC Direct’s attempt at a mini-figure line. Introduced in late 2001, the first figure in the Pocket Heroes line was a giveaway of a Golden Age style Wonder Woman which was included with DC Direct’s Solomon Grundy. The first carded series of figures were released in the summer of 2002, with new assortments offered just about every three months. Pocket Heroes stand about 3″ high and were sold as pairs on blister cards for about $10 a set retail.
These Series 2 Superman-related figures were released as part of three different assortments in 2003, though Superman was previously available singly in a bag with a header card as a San Diego Comicon exclusive.
Along with the carded figures, some special sets were released including a carded Martian Manhunter with Justice League table and chairs and boxed sets of Justice League, Batman, Green Lantern, and Superman characters… I’ll feature the Superman set at a later date.
DC stopped making Pocket Heroes in 2004. Though several different characters were released, I think the line may have been ahead of its time, especially considering today’s popularity of toys like Lego’s minifigs and Fisher-Price’s Imaginext DC heroes.
