Superman Racing Team Patch

Sometimes when I’m randomly browsing eBay, I’ll stumble on an item that perfectly aligns with some of my other interests… yesterday morning, I was up a little early and found this Superman Racing Team patch. I really don’t know the manufacturer or the date, but if I had to guess, I’d say it was probably a 70s or 80s piece. It measures 3″ in diameter and says “Superman Racing Team” in black letters around the perimeter of the patch. Here’s a picture.

If anyone has any info on this, I’d appreciate it.

Though this probably is more to do with car racing, I really like this item because it goes pretty well with another interest of mine that’s been taking up more and more of my free time over the past year or two. If you’re a regular reader, you may have noticed I haven’t been updating nearly as often as I did the first few years of the site. I’m lucky if I have time or the energy to update once every couple of weeks these days.

That’s because, in 2014, I decided that, after tipping the scales at over 200 pounds, I had to do something. I bought my first computer around 1993, and it was like I bought it, sat in front of it, and didn’t get back up for 21 years. I was in sad shape; I’d get winded walking up a flight of stairs. Inspired by a friend who had some weight loss success, I started walking a mile or two a day to lose weight, then built up to 4 miles. After I lost about 25 pounds, I started to introduce some intervals of running into my walking. I eventually transitioned to all running and eventually lost over 50 pounds. I hadn’t really planned on running any races or anything, but then I saw there was a superhero-themed race nearby (the Superhero 5K in Landisville, PA), so I signed up, did pretty well, and got hooked on running and racing. I’ve done several races since then, including the awesome Rocky Run in Philadelphia where I finished in the top 50 of over 3100 runners. I’m now running about 45-50 miles a week, working toward the nearly impossible (for me) sub-20:00 5K, so that takes up a lot of my spare time.

I’m still interested in Superman collecting, but not as much as I was when I started the site. To be honest, I’ve been feeling pretty out of touch with today’s version of Superman, first with the New 52 redesign, then the Man of Steel movie (which wasn’t awful, just excessively dour), then Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which I hated.

One nice thing I did find out this week… there’s a Superman Road Race at the Superman Celebration in Metropolis, Illinois. For some reason, that event never interested me all that much (being 12 hours away is a barrier), but that race looks great. Unfortunately, my schedule isn’t going to work out this year, but I’m pencilling it in my 2017 race calendar. I only wish they gave out participant medals!
