Legion of Collectors Batman v Superman box

Legion of Collectors is a subscription box service where, for $25 plus shipping (for me, it ended up being $31.95), you’ll receive a box full of interesting DC Comics collectibles every two months. They have two plans: a yearlong plan where they give you some kind of bonus, or a month-to-month plan. Run by Funko, famous for their Pop! line of collectible vinyl characters, each box features themed exclusive content including Funko figures, apparel, comics, and more. The very first release (March of 2016) was this box set with a Superman v Batman theme. Let’s take a closer look at what I got!

Here’s the shipping box. Everything fits neatly inside, but it did sustain a little bit of damage. Not a huge deal.

The box lifts open from the front to reveal the first two items inside on a small shelf… a Wonder Woman patch and a Superman pin.

The patch is about 2.75″ in diameter and features a Wonder Woman logo and the words Wonder Woman and Legion of Collectors around the perimeter.

The pin is pretty cool… black and white in an Art Deco style with a Henry Cavill style Superman.

Pulling the shelf forward reveals the next item in the box: a t-shirt.

Here’s the shirt folded in the shipping bag…

And here’s the design… I love this thing! It’s a Batman v Superman fight poster style shirt. What’s great about it is that the art is modeled after classic José Luis García-López style guide art, not the modern movie stuff. Not 100% sure that it’s Garcia-López art or someone copying his style, but it captures that retro spirit. Also, it’s in Spanish. For me, this shirt was worth most of the purchase price!

Removing the shirt from the box reveals the meat and potatoes of this collector set: two boxed Funko exclusives.

First up is this Dorbz two-pack of Superman and Aquaman in a nice window box. Honestly, I’m not a big fan of Dorbz, but these are pretty cool because they glow in the dark.

Here’s the back. Interesting choice to have windows in the back, too, but I guess that keeps them from having to come up with something to print on the back of the box. Here are some close-up shots of each one:

The most popular item in this box is this exclusive Funko Pop! Armored Batman vinyl figure. Sadly, the box for mine was damaged a little bit in shipping, but I’ll live. For some weird reason, this thing is selling for $40+ on eBay, though I think the price has leveled off a bit since I last checked. If you want one of these, I recommend signing up for the new DC TV box due in May; when I did that, I was given the opportunity to purchase this box, and at the time I ordered a few weeks ago, they showed over 5000 units still in stock, so there’s really no reason to pay aftermarket price for this!

I almost missed the last item in the box…

At the very bottom of the box is this month’s exclusive comic…

A special Legion of Collectors variant of Batman Superman #5. Not too bad.

To be honest, I’m not really into grab bags or these subscription boxes because I generally like to know what I’m getting before I order it. Too often they are just junk some company wants to get rid of and the retail value is completely exaggerated for marketing purposes. However, because the Batman v Superman Legion of Collectors box was out for a few weeks and I was able to see pictures and video of what was included, it was worth it. I really like the shirt and the pin, and I could probably sell that Funko Pop! and more than cover the cost of the whole box!

On the Legion of Collectors site, they claim that each box will contain collectibles worth $50… Let’s examine that claim more closely with estimates of retail value. These are my rough guesses, and I’m going to put a range.

Wonder Woman Patch: $1.99 – $2.99
Superman Pin: $2.99 – $5.99
T-Shirt: $12.99 – $19.99
Pop! Vinyl: $8.99 – $12.99
Dorbz Two-Pack: I have no clue… $9.99 – $14.99
Comic: $2.99 – $3.99

That gives us a range of $39.94 on the low, very conservative end and $60.94 on the high side, so the $50 claim is right down the middle and pretty credible. $25 plus $6.95 shipping is a good value if you like the theme of the box.

Though I don’t know what’s inside, I am in for the next Legion of Collectors box whose theme is DC TV… Here’s the teaser video Funko made for that set, which is due in May:

It looks like they’re going to do something with Supergirl, which would make this fanboy very, very happy!
