In 1970, 7-Eleven began a Slurpee promotion that offered a free plastic cup with a DC Comics character with the purchase of a 16 ounce Slurpee. The amazing thing about this promotion is that they offered 60 different characters to collect. Here is a copy of the checklist they distributed to make sure you could “collect ’em all!”
Because there were so many characters, they even made cups of semi-obscure supporting characters, including Superman’s supporting cast. Pictured below is Jimmy Olsen, a personal favorite of mine thanks to his amazing/surreal eponymous comic series Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen.
What’s interesting is the front shows artwork (likely Curt Swan) of Jimmy as he appeared in the 1960s, wearing a green suit with a bow tie. The text of the cup mentions WGBS-TV. By that time, Jimmy had begun his transition to a more contemporary 70s look with longer hair and sideburns, turtlenecks, wide lapels, and bell bottoms.
7-Eleven’s cup promotion proved to be very popular, and they followed up by releasing series of Marvel characters, including this hilarious/cheesy Stan Lee cup.
